Terri's Reflection
I feel that there were many positive and many negative aspects to this project. Overall, it was the most extensive project I have ever participated in. Project Citizen has lasted longer than any project I have ever completed. There are positive and negative aspects to this as well.
The fact that the project was so long term allowed my group to really develop our idea and our project. We were able to take our time on each section and really put a lot into this project. That being said, there were large gaps of time where we were not working on this project. These gaps made this project kind of forgettable. During the time periods where we were not working on the project, I felt as though I lost interest in the project. I was no longer passionate about this topic or this issue. This lack of interest continued throughout the rest of the project. After time, I did not really want to be completing this project for any longer.
I feel as though my group picked a project that was too difficult to make effective. Since PARCC testing is part of Common Core, a national program, it is highly unlikely that a group of 11th graders would be able to disband it. Therefore, I felt as though our efforts were kind of wasted. Had we picked a more local issue, we could have had a better chance at actually making a difference. Even though I believe that Common Core is a very serious issue and a real problem that needs to be addressed, I do not think our efforts were really effective.
That being said, I felt like the length of this project did teach me a lot about the lawmaking process. We had to do so much work to try and create a new law. I found the practical applications really interested especially since these problems were so relatable to all of us. Even the other topics were interesting. By addressing issues that directly effect us, I felt like this project really tapped into the power of working as a team to solve the problems in society that we have to face on a daily basis.
